The Samsung Gear S with 3G currently costs about $200 with a two-year contract with AT&T. Samsung hasn't released pricing details, so it's hard to say whether or not it's a comparable option to the Apple Watch. The Gear S2 also has a mini alphanumeric keypad, so you can tap out messages flip-phone style. The smartwatch will also be able to replace your wallet once Samsung pushes Samsung Pay to the device later this fall.īattery life is expected to be about two days, so even if your phone dies, the watch can continue to work. You'll also be able to send and receive messages and stream music. Samsung will offer a 3G model for the new Gear S2, so you'll be able to make and receive calls without having your phone nearby. As someone who wears a traditional watch with a rotating bezel, it's also a cool feature that makes the Gear S2 fun to use.
It's an incredibly smart use of space that helps provide more precise navigation. Samsung fixes this problem by turning the entire Gear S2 bezel into a control wheel. Samsung launched their first smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Gear, on Septemas a counterpart to Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets. This product line consists of various iterations of the product.
Using apps on a wearable device can be frustrating because the screens, buttons, and dials are tiny and can be hard to handle. Samsung’s line of smartwatches is the Samsung Gear series, which was rebranded in 2019 as part of the Samsung Galaxy series. The screen size is the same on both(1.2 inches), so it really doesn't matter which one you get, unless you really want leather straps. The sportier model is 42 mm in diameter, and comes in dark gray and silver with a matching dark gray and white, stretchy plastic bands Samsung calls "elastomer." It comes in black with leather straps that can be replaced with traditional watch bands. The classic version is 40 mm in diameter (1.6 inches). There are two models you can choose from: a classic style, and a sportier, minimally larger version. It's a beautiful round display that, from far away, could be mistaken for a traditional watch. Which, to be fair, is also what its partner Oculus told us last September, pointing out that $199 Oculus Go doesn’t totally compete with the Gear VR, since apps that developers make for either one are 100-percent compatible with the other.Unlike its predecessor, the Gear S, the S2 is no longer a rectangular screen wrapped around your wrist. So it’s a pretty decent sign that even if virtual reality is still in limbo right now, Samsung hasn’t given up on it quite yet.

Samsung remarkably did provide an adapter for the Note 9 as well, but it didn’t come in the box you had to contact Samsung to get it mailed. Since Samsung says the adapter you need comes with the Gear VR, that suggests it’ll be even easier to seat a Galaxy S10 than last year’s Note 9. Road to VR reports that all four Galaxy S10 variants will be compatible. Gear VR comes with an adapter that will work with S10,” he wrote. “Yes, the latest model Gear VR will work. The new lineup of Galaxy S10 phones is still compatible with an existing Gear VR headset, a Samsung spokesperson tells me. Just like in 2018, today’s Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event featured a whole bunch of new phones - but not a single mention of VR.īut Samsung hasn’t stopped supporting the tech quite yet.
But 2017 was also the last year that Samsung produced a new Gear VR device, much less a TV spot. Two years ago, Samsung’s virtual reality ambitions were big enough to produce a bizarre, award-winning commercial featuring an ostrich who learns to fly, thanks to a Gear VR headset and the music of Elton John.
